about

I've been wondering a lot recently about past composers like Beethoven and Mozart. They were the cutting edge during their time no matter how dull they seem to us now. It made me think about popular music now-a-days and how un-eclectic and generic it seems. Where are the musical tricks we've just so recently learned in the past century? Why aren't we embracing the different and the new? Where are the time changes, the creative instrumentation, the counterpoint, the harmonies, the jazzyness, and in general the pioneering spirit that we started with? Surely if Mozart or Beethoven were alive today they'd do things in music that no one has ever done before. And they'd probably be pretty progressive thinkers too. They had new age beliefs during their time and would dabble into them now. For example: the law of attraction - everything is infinite and just waiting to be taken. Another example is -persistent people are the most successful-. If someone tells a musician that their music is a whimsical extra farce that no one really needs, they'll risk being a social pariah and outcast among their peers and will ignore that person.
Thinking about Mozart also got me to thinking that people ahead of their time were often ridiculed for their beliefs. That's why it makes me depressed when people don't understand when an artist does something in music that no one has ever done before and ventures into new territory.
Oh well, one of these days there will be more of those kinds of people.
