about

I loved the idea in Herbie Hancock’s ‘Watermelon Man’ to feature an intro, with only a few African instruments. I began with a Simpsons-esque Lydian vamp on log drums and a little percussion. My target for this song was to try to match the tambour of ‘Watermelon Man’. Another inspiration was the song ‘Graceland’ by Paul Simon. The song was doomed to be busy after I composed the transition at 0:21 XD. This song really taught me how to fill space in music; more than how to develop a melody in music. In fact, before I orchestrated this piece it sounded weird and augmented. I thought to myself after doing research on Thomas Newman and his scores for Finding Nemo and Wall-E, if the Ionian scale is the scale of adults playing music, then Lydian is the scale of children playing music.
